FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ( F.A.Q's)

Q. WHO CAN GIVE BLOOD?

Ans. Anyone over the age of 17 years and weighing 110 pounds is eligible to donate. Anyone over 70 years needs written permission of his/her physician. You may not donate if you have had hepatitis, have a heart condition or belong to high-risk group for AIDS.

Q. WILL IT HURT?

Ans.A slight pinch is felt when the needle is inserted. Most people do not find this uncomfortable.

Q. SHOULD I DONATE IF I AM HAVING A DISEASE OR A CONDITION?
Ans. Each disease and condition has to be evaluated by a doctor. However you can refer to the ELIGIBLE DONORS page to evaluate your donor status.

Q. WHO NEEDS BLOOD?
Ans. A large percentage of all hospitalized patients receive blood transfusions. The average use of each of these patients is about 3 pints. Leading users are cancer, heart disease, gastrointestinal disease, fractures and trauma, anemia, bone and joint abnormalities, organ transplant and lung, liver and kidney disease.

Q. CAN I CONTACT AIDS BY DONATING?

Ans. NOT at all ! The donation process is carefully planned to be sterile and all equipment used is disposable and then discarded.

Q. WILL I FEEL FATIGUE AFTER DONATION?
Ans. Most people feel comfortable after donation. Follow instructions of the nurse/doctor to eat well, drink plenty of fluids and do not over exert yourself. Donors should not indulge in strenous exercise or activity immediately after donation.

Q. HOW OFTEN CAN I DONATE?
Ans. Donations can be made after 56 days say upto a maximum of 6 times a year.
Q. WHAT PRECAUTIONS SHOULD I TAKE AFTER BLOOD DONATION?
Ans. Post - donation observe the following : (i) Eat light refreshment and rest for 10-15 mins (ii) If you are a smoker, do not smoke for atleast an hour;
(iii) Avoid heavy exercise and exertion for 24 hours;
(iv) Avoid alcohol for 24 hours;
(v) Drink more than your usual intake of liquids during the 24 hours post donation.

Q. CAN I GET AIDS, HEPATITIS OR ANY OTHER DISEASE BY DONATING BLOOD?
Ans. NO. All Blood donation procedures use single use disposable collection equipment. As a donor you may insist on this.

Q. HOW MUCH BLOOD IS TAKEN AT THE TIME OF DONATION?

Ans. Only 350 ml – 450 ml of blood is taken depending upon the weight of a donor. Since an average person has 5.5 liters of blood in his body, he can tolerate withdrawal of one unit of blood. This withdrawn volume of blood is restored within 24 hours and the hemoglobin and cell components count are corrected in about two months. Therefore, it is safe to donate blood every three months.

Q. HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS OF DONATION TAKE?
Ans. The actual time of taking blood is about 10-15 minutes. But there will be a medical check up before this process and you will be advised to take some rest for about 5 – 10 minutes. After the donation you will be given some refreshment. So, the whole process takes about 30 – 45 minutes. But nothing is more precious than saving a life.

Q. ARE THERE ANY SIDE-EFFECTS OF BLOOD DONATION?
Ans. No! Your health will not suffer because of the blood you have donated. This, in fact, stimulates the bone marrow to produce new cells. Some of the first time donors might psychologically feel a little dizzy but that will happen only for few minutes.

Q. WHAT PRECAUTIONS DO I NEED TO TAKE FOR DONATING BLOOD?

Ans. Each time you donate blood; the needle used in the procedure should be sterile and should be disposed off after single use. If the conditions are not hygienic, you may be exposed to infection. Thus the possibility to contract a disease increases

Q. DO I NEED TO GO UNDERGO ANY KIND OF MEDICAL CHECK-UP BEFORE DONATING BLOOD?
Ans. A brief interview of the donor is taken before donating blood. You will be asked about your medical history and current health. After that your hemoglobin level, pulse, temperature and blood pressure are checked.
