WHO NEEDS BLOOD? & WHY DONATE BLOOD ?

WHO NEEDS BLOOD?
Every 2 seconds someone in our country needs blood. Your blood helps more than one life at a time. Accidents, premature babies, major surgeries require Whole blood, where your blood after testing is used directly. Trauma, Anemia, other surgeries requires only RBCs, which are separated from the blood. The procedure of splitting blood components is called Cytapheresis. Similarly Platelets are used for Cancer patients undergoing Chemotherapy, Dengue fever, etc. Fresh frozen plasma is used for patients having massive Transfusions, Plasma is used for Burns and Cryoprecipitate is used for Hemophilia.
Blood is needed at regular intervals and at all times as it has only a limited time to store. Red blood cells can be stored for about 42 days, Fresh Frozen Plasma and Cryoprecipitate for a year and platelets for 5 days.
Apheresis (ay-fur-ee-sis) is a special kind of blood donation that allows a donor to give specific blood components, such as platelets. Platelets must be used within five days of collection, hence blood donations are especially needed around 3-day weekends. Red blood cells must be used within 42 days. Plasma can be frozen and used for up to a year.

WHY DONATE BLOOD ?

Blood is the living fluid that all life is based on. It represents about 8% of body weight. In females volume averages 4-5 litres and in males 5-6 litres. People, who live at high altitudes, where the air contains less oxygen, may have upto 2 quarts (1.9 liters) more blood than people who live in low regions. Blood is composed of 60% liquid part and 40% solid part.
The liquid part called Plasma, made up of 90% water and 10% nutrients, hormones, etc. is easily replenished by food, medicines, etc. But the solid part that contains RBC (red blood cells), WBC (white blood cells) and Platelets take valuable time to be replaced if lost. AA microliter (1/30,000 of an ounce) of blood normally contains about 4 million to 6 million red blood cells, 5,000 to 10,000 white blood cells, and 150,000 to 500,000 platelets. The red and white blood cells are also called Corpuscles.
The time taken by a patient s body to replace it could cost his/her life. Sometimes the body might not be in a condition to replace it at all. As you know blood cannot be harvested it can only be donated. This means only you can save a life that needs blood.
Every year India requires 40 million units of 250cc blood out of which only a meager 500,000 of blood units are available. Saving a life does not require heroic deeds. You could just do it with a small thought and an even smaller effort for saying "yes".

BLOOD TRANSFUSION

Blood transfusion is the transfer of whole blood or blood components into a person's bloodstream. People who lose large amounts of blood in accidents, during surgery or due to some illnesses often need blood transfusions. Blood Transfusion is a safe and effective medical procedure that saves many lives.
Most people need only some parts of blood in a transfusion. For example, in a disease called hemophilia, blood does not clot normally. A person with hemophilia can receive a transfusion of clotting factors, the plasma proteins that cause blood to clot. Another person can receive a transfusion of red blood cells from the same unit of blood.
